Why visit Uganda?

Are you planning for your Uganda safari adventure? Consider including activities such as gorilla trekking, chimpanzee trekking, wildlife safaris, birding tours, and cultural experiences in your itinerary. Keep in mind that Uganda offers a plenty of other enriching experiences beyond these. Regardless of your interests, thorough planning and gathering sufficient information are essential for an unforgettable Uganda experience.

Location of Uganda

Uganda shares borders with Tanzania and Rwanda to the south, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to the west, South Sudan to the north, and Kenya to the east.

Situated along the Equator, Uganda boasts the shores of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake and the world’s second largest freshwater body. Within Uganda’s borders lie the Ssese Islands and other smaller islands in Lake Victoria, offering a tranquil African beach holiday experience away from urban hustle. The majestic Rwenzori Mountains, crowned with snow, provide a unique opportunity to witness “snow at the Equator” for those adventurous enough to hike towards the Margherita peak.

Despite its modest size—roughly comparable to the United Kingdom or the state of Oregon in the US—Uganda encompasses 236,040 square kilometers of diverse landscapes, allowing visitors to explore numerous attractions during their vacation. With two weeks at hand, tourists can combine various activities in a single safari, from birding tours and wildlife safaris in the savannah national parks to primate encounters in the forested national parks, including gorilla trekking, chimpanzee trekking, and golden monkey trekking.

Uganda Climate

Uganda's climate offers a welcoming embrace year-round. As a tropical country, much of Uganda rests on the African plateau, ranging between 900 to 1,500 meters above sea level. This elevation grants Uganda a delightful tropical climate, with daytime temperatures averaging between 21 to 28 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures between 12 to 18 degrees Celsius, ideal for gorilla trekking, wildlife safaris, and birding tours regardless of the season. The warmest months span from June to August and December to February, with temperatures peaking at 28 to 30 degrees Celsius. Rainfall occurs typically during April to May and October to November; however, showers are often brief, followed by clear skies. Thus, there's no need to hesitate to embark on your gorilla safari, wildlife adventure, or birding expedition even during these "rainy" months. For those planning hikes in the Rwenzori Mountains, it's advisable to schedule trips during December to February or June to August. In the Karamoja region, home to the Pian UPe Game Reserve and Kidepo Valley National Park, the rainy season spans from May to September. It's important to note that climate change has brought some unpredictability to Uganda's seasons, with occasional disruptions such as unexpected rains during typically dry months or increased sunshine during rainy seasons.

Uganda Culture and People

Uganda boasts a plethora of cultural tourism sites and events, showcasing the rich diversity of over 40 tribes. Throughout the country, one can explore numerous chiefdoms and kingdoms steeped in history. While these entities no longer hold political power, they wield significant cultural influence, albeit varying in levels of activity. In the hilly southwest region, one can encounter the Batwa, the country's most ancient inhabitants, who were once hunter-gatherers. The earlier inhabitants have left behind a cultural legacy, including remarkable rock paintings like those found at the Nyero Rock Shelter near Kumi. Among Uganda's prominent kingdoms are Buganda, Bunyoro, Busoga, and Tooro, all of which trace their origins back to the medieval kingdoms of Batembuzi and Bacwezi according to tradition. These Bantu kingdoms stand as pillars of Uganda's cultural heritage, preserving age-old traditions and customs.
