History of Kisiizi Falls
Kisizi Falls carries a dark chapter in its history. According to local elders, the falls were once a place of horrific punishment. Unmarried Bakiga girls who became pregnant faced a brutal ordeal. Escorted by their family to the precipice, they were forced to jump, a grim consequence for defying societal expectations of premarital chastity. This extreme practice aimed to deter other young women from engaging in premarital sex.
A haunting question lingers for many visitors, myself included: where was the accountability for the men involved? This echoes the biblical story of the adulterous woman, where her accusers never mentioned the other party. Perhaps, like the perpetrators of so many injustices, those responsible here chose to ignore this aspect.
Legend has it that the practice ended dramatically. A young woman condemned to the falls, in a desperate act of defiance, clung to her escorts as they pushed her. All three plunged to their deaths. The loss of the men supposedly stopped the practice, for fear that others would follow suit.
