10 things you need to know before visiting Uganda

Uganda

Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa commonly referred to as, the “Pearl of Africa.” It is famous for its stunning scenery, diverse wildlife, and friendly people. Whether you’re looking to track gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, go white-water rafting on the Nile River, or simply relax on the shores of Lake Victoria, Uganda has something to offer everyone. But before you pack your bags and head off on your Ugandan adventure, here are a few things you need to know:

Visas and Vaccinations

You’ll need a visa to enter Uganda. You can apply for one online (e-visa) or get one upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport. [Uganda visa]
Most countries require a visa to enter Uganda. You can apply for an e-visa online through the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration. It costs $50, excluding service fees. Avoid fraudulent portals that charge more.
Visa on Arrival: While e-visas are recommended, you can still get a visa on arrival at land borders (unofficially). However, for flights, e-visas are mandatory. Prepare a passport copy, recent passport-size photo, and your yellow fever vaccination certificate1.

Vaccinations

Make sure you’re up to date on all your vaccinations, including yellow fever, which is mandatory for entry. Check with your doctor for a full list of recommended vaccinations.
Ensure you have a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate. They check it at the border.

Health Precautions

Vaccinations: Besides Yellow Fever, consider vaccinations for DTP, Hepatitis A, and malaria.
Malaria: It’s prevalent in Uganda, so take necessary precautions.
Medical Insurance: Ensure you have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies.

Money Matters

The Ugandan shilling (UGX) is the official currency. While credit cards are becoming more widely accepted, especially in Kampala, cash is still king. It’s best to bring a mix of Ugandan shillings and US dollars.

Getting Around

Uganda is a relatively small country, but getting around can be time-consuming due too heavy traffic during rush hours. Domestic flights are an option, particularly if you’re short on time. Many national parks can also be reached by road but be prepared for bumpy rides.

Public transport is available in mini vans usually called Taxi’s at a fair price usually less than two dollars depending on distance travelled. These will be packed to capacity, so for a much more comfortable ride, Uber or private car hire referred to as “a special” in Uganda will provide much more comfort.

Motorcycles called Boda boda are also one of the most convenient ways to go about mainly during heavy traffic hours. Be sure to ask for a helmet once you sit on a boda boda.

There is no subway in Uganda.

When to Visit

Uganda has a tropical climate with two rainy seasons. The drier seasons, from June to September and December to February, are generally considered the best times to visit for wildlife viewing and outdoor activities.

Responsible Tourism

Uganda is a beautiful country with a rich culture. Be respectful of the environment and local customs. Pack lightly, avoid single-use plastics, and dress modestly when visiting villages or religious sites.

Safety

Uganda is a generally safe country, but petty theft can occur. Be mindful of your belongings, especially in crowded areas. It’s also wise to stay informed about current events and avoid demonstrations or political rallies.

Gorilla Trekking

Many travelers visit Uganda for mountain gorilla trekking. Obtain permits in advance for Bwindi National Park.

Packing Tips

Pack for warm weather but bring along a light rain jacket as showers can occur throughout the year. Long, loose-fitting clothing is recommended, especially for game drives and hikes. Don’t forget comfortable shoes, a hat, and plenty of sunscreen.

Do not drink Tap water.

Tap water is generally not considered very safe for drinking without first treating. Even the locals do not drink direct water from the tap. Instead, Ugandans first boil the tap water and leave it to cool, then it is stored for drinking. Tourists are advised to buy bottled water for their consumption.

Street Food and Nsenene (Grasshoppers)

You can easily get street food on the go in Uganda. Rolex is one of the most common and delicious street foods you will come across. Rolex is a chapati rolled up with fried egg, tomatoes, onions and some vegetables like cabbages. Be sure to try it out. Grasshoppers are a delicacy in Uganda. Do not hesitate to try them out if you come across the fried ones on the streets.

Embrace the Adventure
Uganda is a land of adventure. Be prepared for things not to go exactly according to plan. Relax, go with the flow, and enjoy the experience!
